Six weeks before an international departure: what to have done
The six-week mark is where a comfortable trip and a stressful one separate. This is what we chase people about, and what is easier to do now than in the last fortnight.

Six weeks is not an arbitrary number. It is roughly when airlines want passenger details finalised, when hotels want the rooming list, and when a visa application still has room to go wrong without ruining anything.
What should be finished by now
- Passport details submitted for every traveller, spelled exactly as printed
- Travel insurance bought, with the certificate uploaded to your booking
- Any visa application submitted, not merely researched
- Room arrangements confirmed, including who is sharing with whom
- Accessibility or dietary requirements recorded on the booking
What can comfortably wait
- Currency — cards work in most of our destinations and rates rarely move enough to matter
- Packing, unless something needs buying
- Seat requests on flights, which are allocated closer to the day anyway
- Downloading anything you want for the journey itself
What we are doing at the same time
Ticketing, once we have everyone's details. Confirming rooming lists with hotels. Booking airport assistance where it has been requested. Checking that every passport we hold still has enough validity left, and writing to anyone whose does not.
Your balance is usually due around now too. Tickets are issued once it clears, so a late balance means late tickets even when everything else is in order.
The two things people leave too late
Insurance and visas, in that order. Insurance bought in the final fortnight will not cover you for anything that happened before you bought it, which is precisely when most cancellations occur. A visa started at four weeks is a coin toss you did not need to take.
We would far rather chase you at six weeks than explain something at the gate.

About this guide
Prepared by the Global Tamil Travels team in London — the same people who plan the departures and answer the phone. We write these because the questions come up often enough that a proper answer saves everybody time.
This guide is reviewed whenever the underlying process or requirement changes, and at least twice a year. It is not legal or medical advice, and we do not present it as such.
