What to pack for a UK day trip when the weather may change

What this guide will help you understand

  • What to carry on a coach day trip and what to leave
  • How to dress for a day that starts at 5am and ends at 8pm
  • What to do about the weather forecast

A UK day trip is a strange packing problem. You are out for twelve hours or more, you cannot return to a room to change, and you have to carry everything you bring — but you also have a coach to leave things on, which changes the calculation entirely.

Dress for four hours, not for the day

You will leave in the dark and cold, walk in whatever the middle of the day brings, and come back tired. Nothing you can wear works for all three. Layers you can take off and leave on the coach solve it; a single heavy coat does not.

Footwear is the one thing worth being fussy about. Coastal and countryside stops mean uneven ground, and half our late returns are somebody walking slowly back in the wrong shoes.

The small bag you actually carry

What can stay on the coach

A jumper for the evening, a change of footwear if the walking is muddy, and anything you bought at the last stop. The coach is locked when the group is away from it and the driver stays with the vehicle at most sites.

About the forecast

Check it the night before rather than the week before, and then pack for the version one step worse. British weather forecasting is genuinely good at twelve hours and genuinely poor at five days.
